Clicking knife used in footwear industry

Clicking knife, a knife, with a wooden and plastic handle, with a thin, flexible blade, used in a footwear industry for cutting the components of footwear from the leather and as well as synthetic, fabric  by the clicker ( person who cuts the components).

This knife blade can be tightened by the screwing the handle.

The upper clicking knives shall be of the following two types:

Type 1 -Upper clicking knife with adjustment screw at the back of the hand (see Fig. 1).

Type 2 -Upper clicking knife with adjustment screw at the ferrule (see Fig. 2).

Materials

Blades- The blades shall be made from either high carbon steel or low alloy steel or high speed steel and shall be of 0.6 mm thickness.  The blades can be made from bronze.

Handle- Handle of the clicking knife shall be made from wood which does not stain leather.  Handles manufactured from other suitable materials which do not cause stain to leather or break during use.

Screw-For Type 1 clicking knife the screw shall be made from mild steel wire conforming to shall be of M5 size.

Hold-fast, Cap and Ferrule-These shall be made from mild steel, having rust-preventive coating. In addition for Type 2 clicking knife, the ferrule and cap shall also be threaded.

Shape and Dimensions -The shape and dimensions of the clicking knife shall be as given in Fig. 1, and Fig. 2 for Type 2 clicking knives, respectively.

Hardness-The hardness of the finished steel blades measured as near to the cutting edge as possible, shall be as given below:

a) High carbon steel 693 to 762 HV

b) Low alloy steel 762 to 840 HV

c) High speed steel 738 to 840 HV.

General Requirements and Finish

• The handle, when made of wood, shall be finished smooth, and French polish or lacquer shall further be applied to give a bright finish.
• The screw shall be free from cracks and other visual defects.
• All parts of the knife shall fit flush to each other and the hold-fast shall be easily adjustable through the screw of the handle.
• The cutting edge of the blade shall be sharp enough to cut the upper leather at the stroke. The other edges shall be blunt and evenly smooth and shall be free from cracks and other manufacturing defects. The edges shall be rounded smooth.
